NFL Star Darren Waller Contemplates Retirement

Giants Tight End Questions Future After First Season in New York

Darren Waller, the 31-year-old tight end for the New York Giants, is contemplating retirement following his first year with the team. The 6-foot-6, 238-pounder, told Dan Duggan of The Athletic that he's "still trying to figure out what's next." Waller signed a three-year, $51 million extension with the Las Vegas Raiders in September 2022, but was traded to the Giants in March 2023.

Waller has been a productive player throughout his career, catching 254 passes for 3,028 yards and 23 touchdowns in six seasons. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2020 and 2021. However, Waller has also dealt with injuries throughout his career, including a back injury that limited him to 11 games in 2022.

If Waller does retire, it would be a significant loss for the Giants. He is one of the most talented tight ends in the league and would be difficult to replace. However, Waller's health concerns could make retirement the best decision for him both on and off the field.

The Giants are hoping that Waller will return for the 2023 season, but they also understand that he needs to do what's best for him. If Waller does decide to retire, the Giants will have to look for a new tight end to fill his role.
